Why English, Explained?

English shouldn't feel like guesswork.

Students often have good ideas but struggle to know what exam questions are really asking, how to analyse effectively, or how to turn their understanding into strong written responses.

English, Explained is about making those processes clear — so students understand what they're doing, why they're doing it and how to make progress.

Clear.
Complex texts, concepts and exam skills broken down into manageable steps.

Personal.
Teaching shaped around each student's strengths, gaps and goals.

Expert.
Tuition informed by classroom teaching, examining and moderation experience.

Meet Teri

Experienced teacher. AQA examiner. English specialist.

A woman sitting at a wooden dining table with a white vase holding dried flowers in the foreground. In the background, there is a wooden shelf with three potted plants on top and indoor lighting illuminating the wall.

I'm Teri, a qualified secondary English teacher with six years' classroom experience, specialising particularly in GCSE English.

Alongside teaching, I've worked as an AQA English Literature examiner and have extensive experience of assessment, moderation and standardisation. This gives me a detailed understanding of what students are being asked to do — and how to make those expectations clear.

I created English, Explained because I believe students make the most progress when they understand why something works, rather than simply memorising techniques.

My approach is calm, clear and encouraging, helping students develop the confidence and independence to make genuine progress.
